Popcorn ceiling is an attractive decorative element homeowners can use to add visual interest to their interiors and soundproof their rooms. Unfortunately, when popcorn ceiling becomes damaged, it can be difficult to repair. The main challenge consists in matching the original texture to get a seamless patch, indistinguishable from the surrounding ceiling.
When repairing your popcorn ceiling, there are four tips you should keep in mind to get your ceiling back in tip-top shape.
1. Identify and fix the root cause of the damage. The first thing you need to do is determine what caused the damage in the first place. If you don’t find and fix the underlying issue, the problem will most likely reoccur and you’ll need to repair the ceiling again very soon. For instance, if the problem is a leaky roof, you need to fix it before repairing your popcorn ceiling. Also, if there is a deep crack in your ceiling caused by a structural issue, it’s very important to have it fixed before it becomes worse. On the other hand, if you’ve accidentally damaged the ceiling – as an example, you might have scraped it while moving the ladder around to paint your crown molding – you can proceed directly with the repair.
2. Prepare the damaged area. After eliminating the root cause of the problem, you need to assess the condition of the ceiling. In case of water damage, allow the ceiling to dry before scraping off flaking paint and texture. To ensure the new texture will blend in seamlessly, scrape the stained or damaged popcorn material, going about one inch around the damaged area. Then, sand the surface properly, wipe the area using a damp cloth, apply a high-quality stain-blocking primer and let it dry completely to provide an adequate surface for the new texture to adhere to. When scraping off the ceiling and applying the new texture, don’t forget to put on your dust mask and safety glasses.
3. Choose the right popcorn ceiling patch product. Today, you can find three popcorn textures: fine, medium and coarse grades. Choosing the right texture is critical to make a repair that doesn’t look like a repair. When repairing your popcorn ceiling, the best option for a flawless, professional finish is a “mix-it-yourself” product that can be applied by hand with a roller. But for this, you need to know how to fine-tune the density of the texture and how to spread it with the roller to create the much-desired popcorn effect. If you’re an inexperienced DIYer, a premixed product, such as spray texture, is a much better alternative. One thing you should be aware of is that these products are only suitable for making small repairs.
4. Apply the product following the manufacturer’s instructions. When using spray texture, all you have to do is shake the spray can for the amount of time specified on the label and spray the area. Since matching the existing texture is a matter of trial and error, we advise you to experiment with different application techniques before applying the product to the ceiling. To apply the right amount of product, it’s better to start with one coat, let it dry and then apply one or two more coats, as needed.
